Queens Of Comedy Have The Best Medicine

Jul 30, 2019, 10:00 AM

2 August is Queens of Comedy day at Mass Square, as an all-female line up will be taking centre stage, proudly brought to you by Major Moves Comedy.

The event, which promises to have you on the floor with laughter, will feature female comedians from different African countries alongside Botswana’s heavyweights. Comedians from South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe will be sharing the stage with local acts such as Rekunde, Lebo English and Mamito. Some of these comedians include Zambia's premier female comedienne who is part of the Night of Laughter stand-up comedy, Vikacha. She also dabbles modelling, TV presenting and threatre acting. Mandy, who is The Kingdom of Eswatini's only female comedian has featured in big events which include Swaziland International Comedy Festival, Zero Chill Comedy and MTN Rhymes and Laughter.

According to Major Moves Comedy, the movement is aimed at putting the spotlight on women in comedy across the globe, especially because the scene is male dominated. It is also meant to inspire and motivate more women to consider a career in comedy which is why a platform will be given to upcoming female comedians to share the stage with the established acts.

Events coordinator Gaolathe Kediemetse was quoted in The Voice BW saying:
“Queens of Comedy offers a platform for local and international comics to collaborate and find answers to the many challenges they encounter. The event was put together to develop and encourage female participation in the comedy industry."

We, at Tswalebs, certainly love it when women are being recognised and empowered for their contributions to the arts sector. We recently reported on another all-female event, the Mosadi Sechaba Festival, which will be graced by the likes of Samantha Mogwe, Charma Gal, Mpho Sebina and many other exceptional women.
2-3 November have been dubbed by The Mosadi Tota Foundation, in partnership with the Botswana Gender Based Violence Prevention and Support Center, as days to celebrate and honour influential women who work hard for themselves and those around them. Read all about it here.

Tickets for the Queens of Comedy event are available at Webtickets and Spar outlets priced from P200 single and P300 double.
