Yarona FM is making sure Botswana musicians get the airplay that they deserve on the station with its new initiative #YaronaFM50.

The Botswana private broadcaster has announced that there are increasing local music airplay up to 50%, leveling the playing field by playing local tracks for every international song plated.

Speaking to MmegiOnline, the station’s program manager, Tshepang ‘DJ Izzy’ Motsitsi said the decision to increase local artist airplay comes after complaints from musicians.

“Most radio stations gave international content first priority over local content. So local artists complained about this and their complaints were heard,” Motsitsi said.

The station's move comes after some artists really found out that the royalties they are earning are peanuts following a dispute between local artists and the Copyright Society of Botswana (COSBOTS).

According to MmegiOnline artists demanded payment of their royalties, with some claiming that it has been a while since they even received royalty payments.

COSBOTS has however blamed broadcasters for the low airplay of local music, resulting in low royalty earnings.

The move by YaronaFm has been applauded by many as now local artists will now enjoy equal rotation as international artists increasing their revenue.
