Amongst the many countries in Africa, Botswana seems to be lagging behind in terms of polished content and creators. While other countries like Nigeria and South Africa are scoring big on producing quality content that has enticed big screens such as Netflix, Botswana is still close to nothing when it comes to world class content creation. There is no doubt that there is still much that need to be done in Botswana’s film industry. Investment, furnishing and mentorship to film makers can enhance the film industry.

Connie Ferguson has struck gold in South Africa’s film industry and the Ferguson Films has become the hottest thing in South Africa. She was popular for her generation role as Karabo and today she is running a film production empire which has produced shows such as ‘The Queen’ which currently airs on Mzansi Magic channel and on Showmax. Since inception, there is never a day she scouted for talent in Botswana. A gesture that is crucial for someone who believes in growing people back home. Or at least collaborate with local talent to see how best she can assist. Mothusi Sengwatse was only amongst the few to be casted on one of the Ferguson's films.

It is so common that Muvhango Soapie now and then come to Botswana for talent. So far, we have seen kabo Timela, Maxwell Dichi, Sharon Seno and Angela Atlang who have stunned the whole of Msanzi with their talent.  Generations as well has seen talent here and have worked with few actors, Dichi being one of them. Another Soapie that has casted locals is Scandal Soapie which airs on ETV. Kgomotso Ratsie is one of the local talent who were casted on the show. Now it will be amazing if the Ferguson Film also played their part. It will be amazing if Ferguson would remember her people back home. Something she has promised in her recent visit to the country.

On several occasion, Ferguson’s came to Botswana on several occasions. In 2019, Connie Ferguson and her later husband, Shona Ferguson, came to Botswana for the Presidential Initiative. This was a Presidential call for creatives, United States of America media mogul, Steve Harvey and other influential personalities responded to the presidential call. It was during that time that people were happy to see the Ferguson’s. Many were hoping they would scout for talent back home or invest in the local arts but since then they have been quite.

Recently, she made a visit back home again and she also made time for the creatives again. Which was commendable. While she had an intimate time with creatives, she had still not yet brought substance again to her fellow countrymen in the arts. However, she had a conversation with the creatives and allowed them to share their different experiences. Promising them that very soon she will be here to work with film makers and create content. She has made yet another promise to rescue Botswana arts and many are anticipating this.

“I think it’s high time i produce something here with Batswana as well as with a local production house,” she said during her attendance of the Presidential Initiative held at University of Botswana Indoor Sports Arena.

Botswana has proved on so many occasions that they are capable. While the ground can be limiting due to lack of resources and finances, some have been doing great abroad. Some are rather still tilling the ground with the hope that one day the industry will fully open for them to soar.
