Lessons in love from the Fergusons

Lessons in love from the Fergusons

When Shona Ferguson met Connie Masilo almost two decades ago, it was a chance encounter. As the story goes, Shona had gone to pick someone up from Connie's house and ended up asking for a glass of water, which subsequently led to their meeting.  The pair were married about three months later, and the rest is history.

Love requires courage - to pursue it, to cultivate it and to stick it out through the rough patches. 17 years later the Fergusons are still going strong and look happier than ever. The key? Well, we'd all like to know.

First and foremost it seems the Fergusons have a strong and jovial friendship. The pair often upload candid moments of themselves together and it's evident they enjoy each other's company. We're sure that bond comes in handy during the times when, like any other couple, they might not like each other much.  Mixing business with one's personal life has been the downfall of many couples because it can be difficult to leave office problems at the office at the end of the day, and have to cuddle with your business partner who may have dropped the ball in the professional sphere of one's life.  That friendship would make it easier to detach, or at the very least apply compassion and empathy towards the problem.

Second, the couple seems to have faith.  It's often said at weddings that one's union should put God at the forefront in order to weather whatever storms may come up, and these two seem to do just that.

As the couple celebrates their 17th year of marriage, it would do us all well to  take a page out of their book, and seek to apply these values to the relationships that matter to us the most.
