The comedy scene in Africa has grown in more ways than one. This particular fraction within the entertainment industry has produced a diverse trailblazing batch of comedians who have taken it up a notch by redefining the conventions of comedy. It is through these comedians that we have learnt to appreciate various forms of comedy, which include, dry comedy, political satire, dark comedy, cringe comedy and many other genres.

The growth of comedy has also found a slot in television, with iconic shows such as The Pure Monate Show keeping us in stitches with their fresh take on comedy back then. But fast forward to 2016, lovers of comedy were treated to another comedy hit show, The Bantu Hour on SABC 2. The star studded cast gave stellar performances of their skits.

This piece shines the spotlight on the modern age type of comedians. These are comics that have stretched the comedy industry and have reinvented it.

1. SKhumba Hlophe

Loyal viewers of SABC 1 may have caught a glimpse of his impressive work on Thandeka's Diary, portraying the character of Bheki Zulu and Throwback Thursday as the host of the evening show. Skhumba Hlophe is Tembisa's pride and joy and has worked tirelessly to cement his name across South Africa.

2. Loyiso Madinga

Loyiso Madinga left a stable career in advertising before fully committing himself to the world of comedy. This brave move has definitely paid off as he was roped in to be Africa's correspondent to The Daily Show, which is hosted by fellow comic and South African, Trevor Noah. Loyiso is currently promoting his upcoming show, Problem Child, which is set to kickstart later in March.

3. Mojak Lehoko

Holding down the number three spot is the talented, Mojak Lehoko. This comic has been quietly making big moves in his illustrious career.

4. Schalk Bezuidenhout

Schalk is another trailblazing comedian in South Africa. Having dipped his fingers in the acting scene, this Kempton Park born comedian is surely stretching his talents.

5. Mpho Popps

Most reality show stars can attest to the fact that it is almost impossible to gain traction after exiting the show, but Mpho has successfully risen to the top after making it to the top four on SABC 1's So You Think You're Funny.

5. Robby Collins

Rounding it off is the supremely talented Robby Collins. His tenure as a comedian has seen him travel all over the world - showcasing just how brilliant he is.

The comedy scene in Africa keeps growing in leaps and bounds, therefore it is safe to predict that the future of comedy is one that will most likely remain hugely viable and sustainable for future comics to come.
